Dutch for babies

Babies love being sung to, in any language. If you'd like Dutch to be part of your baby's world, singing simple songs together is a warm, natural way to do it. But our app is designed for children from about two, so here's how to use it sensibly before then.

Is it a good fit? Honest answer: the app is designed for children aged about 2 to 8, not for babies. With a baby, use the songs as music you listen to and sing together, not as screen time.

Audio and your voice, not a screen

Pediatric guidance, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics', generally recommends keeping screen time very limited for children under two, apart from video calls. So with a baby, play the songs as audio during cuddles, diaper changes or a walk, and sing the Dutch lines yourself. Your voice is what your baby is most interested in.

Learn alongside your baby

The months before your child is two are a great time for you to learn the songs. If you know the greetings, the good-night song and a few animals by the time your toddler starts talking, you'll be able to use Dutch naturally in everyday moments.

Keep it relaxed

There's nothing to test or track at this age. Hearing a loving voice sing in Dutch is enough.

Good to know about Dutch: Dutch shares a lot of vocabulary with English but has a few new sounds: the throaty g, ui and ij. Children usually copy these by ear far more easily than adults do.

Questions parents ask

Can my baby use the app?

We don't recommend it. The app is designed for children aged about 2 to 8. Before two, listen to the songs together as audio and sing to your baby yourself.

Is it worth singing in Dutch if I'm not fluent?

Yes. Babies respond to your voice and the shared moment. Every line in the songs comes with its English meaning, so you'll know what you're singing.
