Portuguese (Portugal) · Toddlers
Portuguese for toddlers
Toddlers learn language by hearing the same words again and again in the moments they care about: food, play, bath time, people they love. Short bilingual songs fit that perfectly, because every Portuguese word comes right next to the English one they already know.
Keep it short and repeat a lot
At this age one or two songs at a time is plenty. Pick a favorite and let it become "their" song for a week; repetition isn't boring to a two-year-old, it's how they learn. Every song in the app shows the Portuguese line with its English meaning, so you always know what you're singing.
Tie words to things they can touch
Toddlers learn concrete words first: animals, food, body parts, the people around them. Use the Portuguese word when the real thing is right there: "dog" when you see a dog, "water" when you pour a cup. The songs give you the words; daily life gives them meaning.
Don't expect them to speak yet
Many toddlers understand far more than they say, in any language. Singing along, pointing and doing the actions all count. If your child answers in English, that's completely normal; just repeat the Portuguese word back casually and keep going.

Quick tips
- Start with the free greetings unit: hello, please, thank you and good night are words a toddler can use every day.
- Do the actions with the songs: wave, clap, point to your nose. Movement helps toddlers stay engaged.
- Use one Portuguese word at the same moment every day (good morning at the bedroom door, good night at lights out).
- Sing together rather than leaving them alone with a screen; the songs work as audio too.
Questions parents ask
Is two too young to start Portuguese?
No. Two-year-olds are busy learning words in their first language, and hearing a second one alongside it is something children all over the world do. Keep it playful and short, and don't worry if they don't say much yet.
Will learning Portuguese confuse my toddler?
Children growing up with two or more languages is very common worldwide, and mixing words from both languages is a normal, temporary phase, not a sign of confusion. If you have specific concerns about your child's speech, your pediatrician or a speech therapist is the right person to ask.
